Brand New Install of 1903 or 1909 immersive control panel issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • I deployed fresh Windows 10 1903 and 1909 while trying to t/s this issue.

As soon as it installs, I'd open Settings - Apps - Default Apps and select my default Video Player. In most cases no issues there. BUT when I add ANY user to this machine, when that user tries to do this, the whole window crashes and goes away. The application log shows the following:

I've figured that this is something to do with the local default profile obviously. I've tried manipulating this many times and when I copy profiles to Default folder, I make some progress but I don't know what exactly fixes it and I also don't know why this doesn't work right outside the box, because I am not making any changes.

I've tried with new admin and reg user and it's the same. I also tried using 3rd party tool which helped me get it to work (defprof.exe) but I can't use their tool because ForensIT runs the service on the box and customer doesn't allow it.

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Hi Zack,

I agree with your judgement, try to Configure Default User Profile Settings in audit mode and then generalize the Windows installation by using an answer file with CopyProfile

  • You read my mind because I actually went to Audit Mode earlier and let the Windows update so I can proceed with the generalization.

It's on my to-do list first thing AM and I'll report back my findings. Thank you for your fast reply!

  • I did try the following:

    1903 and 1909 both:

I generalized with ONLY copyprofile unattend.xml and that gets me to the point where the window itself doesn't crash when I select default Media player.

This time around it pops around 18 messages on the very first logon after sysprep with App Default Reset errors as shown in the screenshot.

This would happen before but usually I would not be able to change the default app. However, now I can do so and I assume that it will reset it back each time so this is really a pain in the butt to deal with all together.

I would hope Microsoft is aware of this issue and can release some sort of a patch to fix it. I am out of options here. There is no reason this should be so complicated to deal with.

I should be able to create the machine and add users without any issues with subsequent profiles out of the box. Now, if I was personalizing, generalizing, customizing, that's another story but the brand new, intact install should be good to go... :/

  • I was just testing 1909 image that was a fresh install (Enterprise).

I went ahead and upgraded to the new feature update 2004.

I stopped seeing App Default reset errors. (Double) Tested by creating a new local user. Logged in without any annoying notifications.

If anyone else is reading this and had this issue, please let me know if feature update to 2004 helps you out too?
