Trouble with quicken 2004 vs windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I am trying to install quicken 2004 on to my new lap top which runs windows 7. I keep getting asked for MFC70.DLL. I havedownloaded this but it doesnt seem to want to know. Is it a case of 'the program is too old to have any more tech suport and its time to get a new one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi,

First, I noticed that on the quicken 2004 was not compatible with windows 7 but the latest quicken 2010 does. See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Search.aspx?type=Software&s=quicken%202004&page=2

You can consider switch to the latest version. However, if you would stay quicken 2004, try the following as some people resolved the issue by the following steps:

    1. Uninsatll quicken 2004
    2. Reinstall it in compatibility mode

Set the compatibility options on the installation program "start.exe" to "windows xp sp3" and "run as administrator". After install, do the same for the "qw.exe"

  • Hi slomomirimar,

To get Quicken XG 2004 to work in Windows 7, you'll need to do a couple of things:

    1. Run setup (D:\start.exe) in compatibility mode for 'Windows XP (Service Pack 3)'.
    2. Copy mfc70.dll, msvcp70.dll and msvcr70.dll from 'C:\Windows\System32\' on a 'Windows XP Service Pack 3' PC to 'C:\Program Files\Quicken\'.
    3. Run qw.exe in compatibility mode for 'Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

I ran both setup and the application with administrator privileges, but I just tried the application again without and it seems to work fine.

    Hope this helps.

  • copy mfc70.dll msvcp70.dll and msvcr70.dll from the quicken program folder in XP.   I have them on my cruzer and would attach them if I knew how.

  • It appears as if this solution will work using Windows 7 Pro. Apparently does not work in WIndows 7 Home Premium

  • I upgraded from Windows Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional, downloaded Windows XP Mode from Microsft, re-installed Quicken XG 2004. My Quicken 2004 was functional again.

There maybe shorter solutions, but the above worked for me

  • Just want to confirm that this worked for me today on my Windows 7 64-bit - except the place you need to copy the dlls mentioned is (as you'd expect) C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken. It's the same principle as getting it working on Vista which I first found posted by jt64 on this forum http://boards.fool.co.uk/how-to-run-quicken-2004-r2-on-vista-10534397.aspx so thanks to JT and thanks to Matty Brown UK for the version that works with Windows 7.

You'd think that Quicken would pick up of the intense customer loyalty and update the damn thing!

  • Just tried this same solution on Windows 8 Professional 64-bit.  What a relief that I can continue to use Quicken XG 2004 on my new OS :).

  • Brilliant thank you - worked a treat using Quicken 2004 and Windows 10.

Though I didn't need to do the last part - qw.exe it work without doing that. :)

    Thank you
