Project Server 2016 attach to existing SharePoint 2016 Farm? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Experts,

Here is my situation. FARM1: We already have a farm which is running SharePoint 2016 (many servers - for app, search etc).

FARM2: In another environment we are having a separate farm setup for SharePoint 2016 and Project Server 2016 on the same.

Now how do we get everything into single farm? If we attach these servers from FARM2 to FARM1, what are the impacts. How about the database movement into that farm?

    Anyone has done similar stuff?

Any inputs on this is greatly appreciated.

    Will this approach work:

    • Install SharePoint Server 2016 Enterprise
    • Enable Project Server Service Application on the App Servers in Farm1.
    • Now, we have Project Server 2016 up and running. (Single Content DB)
    • Backup the Content DB (PWA_Content_DB)
    • Restore in the Farm2 SQL Server Database as PWA_Content_DB
    • Detach the Servers from this FARM1 and attach to the Farm2 with appropriate Server Roles (Except DB Server).
    • Enable the Project Server Service Application on these app servers with corresponding ProjectServiceDB.
    • Create the PWA instance and attach to the PWA_Content_DB.

Farm2 has the knowledge based on the Service Application running to route the traffic. For e.g., the traffic towards PWA will be directed towards the right application servers which is hosting those services. Also the web instance https://hostname/pwa would be reached accordingly.

  •  Yes, that should work with a slight change

    1) Mount the SharePoint database and stand up the web applications

    2) then enable project server application.

    3) PWA instance will already be there if it was on      Farm1.
