You need too have a legal 2012 install media. It is legal to install
this a secound time with the already used 2012 R2 key.

You only have the right to downgrade, which means from a MS perspective,
you already own 2012r2 otherwise there would be no reason to downgrade.
You will NOT(!) get a 2012 installkey, media or similar.

  • Hi Sir Mark, thank you for the helpful information. But just want to clarify, did you mean, i have to do a clean install of my 2012r2? In my case i have purchased winsvr2016 std and installed it in my new server. I just also want to know if winsvr2016 has a downgrade rights as compared to the previous winsvr release. If this is doable is it the same procedure as stated in the link below?

Sure, you need to. You can not install an older Version over the newer
    one and keep the settings.

Usually yes, depending on your 2016 Licence, if downgrade is included or
    not.

  • I have roughly the same question.

I need to use Windows server 2012 R2 (fresh install) but cannot get a Windows 2012 server license key as Microsoft and my resellers only sell Windows 2016 licenses today.

Does it mean I can install Windows 2012 R2 and then use a Windows server 2016 license key ?

No, it means, that you still need a valid 2012R2 Key, but you are
allowed to use it (your old one) again in case of downgrade rights.

    You have a downgrade /right/, not a downgrade /licence/

  • Hi,

the Windows Server 2016 key is Only for 2016 Version. for 2012 R2 Version you need a valid 2012 R2 key.

for Volume licensing customers, the 2012 R2 Version is available to download from VLSC(downgrade Rights N-2).

however, for OEM and Retail licenses the customer needs a valid key for previous Version even if is used/activated.

    thanks
