Trying To Run Server Clean-Up RRS feed

  • Question

  •

    Good Afternoon,

As stated previously, I have inherited the WSUS server and I am trying to perform a clean-up and get the following error message: WSUS unable to connect to WSUS database. Verify that SQL is running (its not installed and not listed in services). system.data.SqlClient.Sql exception admin console was unable to connect-execution timeout expired. I wish I could paste error message here-but this page does not allow that. This is an old server and I believe no one performed a clean up in at least 2-3 years. I would like to delete old patches, etc. The only clean up function that works is deleting computers that have not checked in in X # of days. Thank you in advance.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for posting here.
Please try the following steps to fix it:

    1. Check the status of the application pool running the WSUS service.
      (1)  On your WSUS Server, launch the IIS Manager.
      (2)  Click 'Application Pools' is in the Connections list.
      (3)  Right click 'WsusPool' and select 'Start' to restart the WSUSPool.

    2. Lower memory limits can also cause a situation.
      (1)  On your WSUS Server, launch the IIS Manager.
      (2)  Click 'Application Pools' is in the Connections list.
      (3)  Right click 'WsusPool' and select 'Advanced Settings…'
             'General' - 'Queue Length' : 25,000.
'Rapid-Fail Protection' - 'Service Unavailable' Response: TcpLevel
             'Rapid-Fail Protection' - 'Failure Interval (minutes)' : 30
             'Rapid-Fail Protection' - 'Maximum Failures' : 60
'Recucling' - 'Private Memory limit' : x4 times, or set to 0 (unlimited).
      (4)  Click 'ok' to save and restart the server.

Reply back with the results would be happy to help.

    Regards,
    Yic

  • Thank you Sir.

I will try this first thing on Monday as we are not allowed to make any server changes today.

    Best regards.

  • We were given permission to make changes.

The server cleanup wizard worked on just one of the clean up items (Unneeded Update files), but failed on "Unused updates and update revisions".

    Error message received was:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server database.

Verify that SQL server is running on the WSUS Server. If the problem persists, try restarting SQL.

System.Data.SqlClientException--Execution Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

I should add I can find no instance of SQL installed.

Any comments or suggestions would be helpful. Thank you for your assistance.

  • Hi,

Please consider trying to clean up WSUS by script: "WSUS Cleanup". After finishing the cleanup, please check if the WSUS console can be started normally.
