Update Rollup 7 for DPM 2012 R2 (KB3065246) keeps rolling back and will not install RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have 4 DPM boxes:-

    2x Server 2008 R2 64bit/DPM 2012 R2

    2x Server 2012 R2/DPM 2012 R2

They are normally updated via SCCM but we have run into an issue with one of them. One of our Server 2008 R2 boxes will not accept Update Rollup 7 while all the others all have. It simply keeps rolling it back near the end, whether we run it from SCCM, manually or any other method I have tried with the errors below. Anyone any ideas what could be causing this?

    Thanks

  • I have attached part of the install error log below, as I think it may shine a light on the issue:-

  • I am having this exact same error. Ive cleared out temp files, uninstalled and reinstalled windows remote management, set permissions to everyone on the drive, and ran the update manually as administrator. Nothing helps. I am extremely stuck on this, and Microsoft needs to chime in!

  • I ended up using a Microsoft call to fix this issue and they eventually got it going, the MS summary is as follows:-

Symptom: UR7 install fails, it rolls itself back In the event logs we get events indicating DPM and DPMAM service crash during the UR7 install

Cause: Mismatched DLLs. We see a lot of errors indicating that dlls are in use and can't be overwritten until reboot

Resolution: We rebooted the server and the UR 7 installed successfully.

I think their resolution oversimplifies it as MS also tweaked the amount of time for the patch to take before it started to roll back. This failed several times but eventually ran. I cannot for the life of me remember what they did different at that point as it was a bit of a surprise when the patch stayed installed. The mismatched dlls may point you int he right direction
