Modem/dial-up connection issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been battling to set up a dial-up connection using my phone and also using a Huawei USB modem on Business edition 32bit. I have the correct drivers. Both pieces of hardware are compatible and work. I have tested it on a Vista Business machine and can see they definitely work.

With both modems, the whole process seems to get to the point where Windows says, modems connecting, then it stops and says connection failed. After investigation I get an error that says 'the server did not respond in a timely fashion'
I think somehow there is a setting on my machine which is preventing the dial-up connection from making that final connect.

    Any ideas?

  • I did that and it said the modem is fine.
After consulting various IT specialists as well as my Service Providers Technical Support team, I decided to just format the notebook.
After spending a whole day reinstalling all my apps, I left the modem for last, and set a system restore point. It installed first time with no hassles.
This was definitely some kind of strange bug in Vista.

  • Hi Jack,

You can use following steps to run a modem diagnostics:

    1.

Exit all programs, and then close all open windows.

    2.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    3.

    Click Hardware and Sound.

    4.

    Click Phone and Modem Options.

    5.

On the Modems tab, select the modem on which you want to run the diagnostics.

    6.

    Click Properties.

    7.

    Click the Modem tab.

    8.

If the default speed is not already set, set the Maximum Port speed to 57600.

    9.

    Click the Diagnostic tab.

    10.

    Click Query Modem.

    11.

If the modem responds and it is functioning, the system displays the modem information. If the message "No Hardware ID Found" is displayed, or if you receive an error message, contact the OEM/manufacturer of your computer for help with troubleshooting the modem errors.

Also, please try reinstalling the modem drive and ensure USB device is working fine.

    Hope this helps.

  • it is a huge problem for me, i'm a CIO in a Brazilian company, and many users, including myself are experiencing this issue on Vista, i just got SP1 installed on my notebook, and gess what? Microsoft as always did not solve it. And just to complete the information when you get this bug no dial-up connections will work. So in the case of companies, just forget VPN connections also...

  • I am experiencing the same problem. Dial-up Networking on Vista Enterprise x64 just seemed to stop working and I can not get ANY type of dial-up connection working all of a sudden. I really do not feel like re-installing the complete OS and all apps again...

  • Gentlemans, after lots of hours spent behind my notebook, and after contacting Microsoft Croatia, i get an information, that you can create a new User account, and then, with transfer all user to user settings,  really transfer all yours files and settings.
and I did that, and it worked.
but unfortunattly, last not for long. Notebook died. BT did not worked, explorer shell used to crash. total disaster...
there wasn't other, then to reinstall my computer. After reinstall it seems that Vista works a kind diferent than previus version,  witch is strange, because i restored my image.

this is a verry strange bug, and i hope that Microsoft team will work to resolve this problem. but i dont know, what i did that cause such crash...
