Activating the Skype For Business 2016 Client RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to prepare a new image for our desktops (we are running Windows 7) and pre-load it with Skype for Business 2016 as we are rolling out SFB for the users at our workplace, the problem is I can't figure out how to activate the Skype for Business 2016 client software. We have a MAK license key but I can't figure out where to punch it in.

On my test environment, after the grace period expired, the Skype client started asking test users for the license, I would like to avoid this with the production.

In most office products you click on file -> help -> and it shows you whether the product is activated, then you can click activate software and either do it online or punch in the key, this doesn't seem to be the case with Skype for Business 2016.

Is there a trick to this? Or at the very least, can I force the grace period to expire so I can activate this software, finish the image, and roll it out?

    Much appreciated.

  • Hi atekkof,

Thank you for your reply and thanks for sharing your result to me.

Based on my test and research, I would suggest you try following method to use the Product Key to activate the application:

Note: Although the screenshots are for Lync 2013 client, but the same for Skype for Business 2016. This deployment is not meant for any Office 365 or Click-to-run product.

1). Open a command prompt window. To do this search “CMD” from the start menu and right click to “Run as administrator”, select “Yes” to run if prompted:

2). Type cd “<path to installer>” e.g. cd “C:\installs” (make sure you include brackets if you have spaces), hit enter then type “setup.exe /admin” to start the customization tool:

3.select the product and click OK:

4). Under “Licencing and user interface”select “Enter another product key” and enter your key. You can also
accept licence terms on behalf of the user, and specify the installation display level:

5). Once you are completed with configuration select “File” – “Save As” and save to your installation directory:

6). Now go back to the command prompt window and run setup.exe /adminfile “<path to file you just created>” e.g. setup.exe /adminfile “C:\installsLyncSetupFile.MSP”:

7). Setup should now start and begin installation:

Hope the method useful to you. If anything I can help, feel free to tell me.

Thank you for your understanding and patience! Have a nice day!

  • Normal SFB 2016 is part of the Office 2016 package and you should use the default installation option, like activating the MAK key for Office.

  • Hi atekkof.

Welcome to post in our forum.

Would you please tell us did you use the MAK for office or only for SFB ?

Based on my understanding, if you want to activate SFB client, as Office does, the standalone Lync installer supports the Microsoft Office Customization Tool.

We can use this tool to specify the product key to be entered during installation.

For the activation steps, you could refer to the following blog

    Hope this helpful to you.

  • I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. We are installing Skype for Business 2016 separately from office. We are currently using Office 2010 and there are no immediate plans to upgrade. I downloaded the SFB 2016 package from the volume licensing portal and once it was installed, it gave me no further options to activate the software.

A quick check using ospp.vbs /dstatus tells me that the software is unlicensed and after 23 days I will get the prompt for activation.

I would like to roll it out in our image pre-activated.
