Sysprep NIC Installation Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an intermittent issue that has been cropping up.  I have a WinXP SP3 image created and drivers for multiple models of Dell Computers (ranging from an Optiplex GX150 - Optiplex 380)

Occasionally during sysprep, the domain join will fail on the Optiplex 380.  Comparing the setupapi.log files between one which joined successfully and one which failed there is one small difference.  In finishing off the NIC install in sysprep, this is logged to the setupapi.log:

    [2010/09/21 10:40:32 412.203]
#-198 Command line processed: C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe -setup
    #-166 Device install function: DIF_PROPERTYCHANGE.
#I292 Changing device properties of "PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_1692&SUBSYS_04001028&REV_01\4&117729E2&0&00E0".
#I306 DICS_START: Device has been started.

on one that fails, all I see is this:

    [2010/12/09 11:46:08 412.203]
#-198 Command line processed: C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe -setup
    #-166 Device install function: DIF_PROPERTYCHANGE.
#I292 Changing device properties of "PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_1692&SUBSYS_04001028&REV_01\4&117729E2&0&00E0".

The NICs in these 2 systems are 100% identical based on the PNP ID, and this is using the exact same image, so the driver is the same as well, but for the life of me I cannot understand why on one machine the device starts during sysprep, where on the other one it doesn't.

Has anyone else ever encountered something like this?

  • What is in the c:windows\debug log ?

What version of NIC driver are you using? When was the latest driver injected into the image?

Tried the simplest possible solution another net cable?

What speed is the cd/dvd prepped at?

What speed capability is the one that fails?

Is the dvd drive cable seated?

What settings were active in the Bios? Automatic plug and play OS?

    Network adapter?
