FAQ - Difference between Read only and View Only Security permission? RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Read only: Users can view the Excel files in MS Office Excel

View Only: Users can view the Excel files in Web browser only

Note: Provided the advanced settings of the library is configured to open in web page.

Let me know if I am correct in this.

  • Hello,

Read - Can view pages, list items and download documents

View Only - Can view pages, list items and download documents. Document types with server-side file handlers can be viewed in the browser but not downloaded.

Server side file handlers - displays a document in the context of the browser rather than opening the document in a client-side application (i.e. InfoPath, Excel, etc.). In other words, your excel file can be viewed in "Read" mode by the users with "View Only" permission

One more difference is: the view only permission allows only viewing of lists but it will not allow you open the documents or list items, whereas you can do it with read permissions

    Hope the information helps!

  • @Shekar: Thanks for the reply.

I believe view only permission allows viewing of lists, documents and list items. I have double checked on that.
