Upgrading from 2012r2 to 2016 with DHCP Clustering RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello. I have 2 domain controllers which also hold DHCP role. They are both running 2012r2 and perform DHCP clustering. I am wanting to upgrade to server 2016 but am unsure as to how to proceed with the DHCP clustering. I realise I could break the cluster however we have a lot of reservations which I don't think come across.

Traditionally, if DHCP clustering were not used, the process would be:

    • backup DHCP (via mmc backup option)
    • demote first DC
    • change name and IP address
    • build new server on 2016 with old DC name and old DC IP address
    • promote server
    • install dhcp role
    • restore dhcp configuration (via mmc backup option)
    • Repeat above steps on second DC.

Will this approach work with DHCP clustering or does it need to be done another way?
