XP Pro 'for refurbished PCs' license for VM RRS feed

  • Question

  • In my computer room, I have 7 XP pro boxes that are running custom software.  The software is required to run on XP and will not run on any other version of the OS.  These machines are Dells and HPs that are using their OEM license.

I want to do away with the hardware, and run these as VMs.  I understand that the OEM licenses are not valid for this use.  I have found a source of XP licenses that say 'For use on a REFURBISHED PC'.  Can these licenses be used for my VMs?

    Thanks - db

  • A VM is not considered a "refurbished PC".

  • OK - How about this.  I have found a source for full retail Windows XP Professional UPGRADE licenses.  If I purchase these, can I upgrade the OEM license to full retail, then transfer it to the VM, legally?

Really, what I need to know is, what do I have to do to move these OEM machines to VMs while staying on the right side of licensing?
