SharePoint 2003 document is opening in unreadble format, while accessing from client desktop. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have SharePoint Server 3.0 /2003, Windows server 2003 and Office 2003 suite were installed. Documents in all documents libraries are of 2003 docs. In the client desktop I have 2016 office suite. While am clicking the document with options Edit in Microsoft Office Word/Excel from my local desktop the document opens with unreadable format. If I download the same to desktop then am able to see the content. Please provide your views to fix this.

  • Hi

Check if the "Do not open selected file types" is by mistake ticked/checked    under

File -  Options - Trust Center - Trust Center Settings - File Block Settings

(The image shown below is from Excel 2013 - However you would have similar options under Excel 2016 too).

    Hope it can help!

  • Thanks for your reply Justin, but it didn't worked out. While we open 2016 files, by default it was selected to option two "Open selected file types in Protected View". If i download to desktop then it works... but it has to open on the fly when we click on the doc.

  • Hi

Maybe you could try to uninstall Office 2016 suit and then install Office 2003 or Office 2007 and see if it works.

  • Ya planning to do the same.... is there any other way that I can open the docs apart from uninstalling.

  • Maybe you could find another Windows Server 2003 which is installed 2016 Office suite, open the same document library and click the document with options Edit to see if it works.
