After upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, all icons on desktop and start menu are blank RRS feed

  • Question

  • After doing an 'in place' upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home premium, all of the desktop and start menu icons have gone blank. The desktop icons will still activate the associated programs, but the icons on the start menu will not. Also, when right-clcking any of the desktop icons or start menu icons, explorer hangs and the system needs to be re-booted.

One interesting thing is that if I go to 'safe mode', all of the icons are there on the desktop and start menu, and everything works as normal. The icon issue only appreas to be an issue when booting up in normal mode.

  • Hi,

I suggest you try the following steps:

    1. Reset the icon cache

    1. Click the Start button, and click Computer .

    2. On the Tool bar, click Organize and choose Folder and Search Options .

    3. Click the View tab, and check to select the Show hidden files and folders option , and click OK .

    4. Then, enter the following directory:

    5. Find the IconCache.db file, and rename it as IconCache.db.old.

    6. Close the window, and restart the computer.

      2. Go to the
    Clean Boot mode

       3. create a new user profile

    Hope this helps.
