Mailbox Move and Outlook Cached Mode RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Exchange 2003 SP2 Servers, FE / BE setup. All mailboxes reside on one BE server. SMTP connector handles all outgoing mail to the internet. OWA, OMA and rpc-over-http are configured.

I have added two new exchange 2003 sp2 servers in a remote site (DR) in FE / BE configuration under the same admin group, routing group. OWA, OMA, rpc-over-http are configured. Mailbox moves to the DR BE server are happening fine.

The plan is to change external DNS and MX to point to the DR FE server for OWA, mail delivery as well as rpc-over-http access. I was able to access a moved mailbox by configuring Outlook profile to point to the DR BE server. I was also able to access the same mailbox if I configure rpc-over-http via the DR FE server as well as OWA.

What I forgot to test was Outlook referral to the new server. That is, if an existing user has his profile pointing to the old BE server starts Outlook (cached mode) after his mailbox was moved, will:

-Outlook automatically refer him to the server where his mailbox has been moved?

    -What about RPC-over-HTTP?

-Will the behavior be different depending on whether the user accesses his mailbox from the LAN or from the internet?

I will have the old BE server up and running (for it to be able to refer moved mailboxes) after all the mailboxes are moved to the DR BE server.

    Responses are much appreciated.

  • Hi,

DSProxy would automatically refer the Outlook client to the other Exchange server. The Outlook client would then update its’ profile.

RPC over https, I think we may have to re-config, since the RPC server has been changed.
