Exchange 2003 Too much Write IOPS on a Mailbox Store. How to investigate? RRS feed

    Dear Exchange Colleagues,

    We have Exchange 2003 Infrastructure and having too much write IOPS on a Mailbox Store (for General Managers). Although the User count in it is just 40 (around 25 IOPS per user per second).

    Each user has Blackberry device (we do have a BES v5). All Mailbox Stores are hosted on EMC CLARiiON CX4-120C SAN (on seperate LUNs on RAID-5 with FC Drives).

    Write IOPS vary from 800 to 1500 while read IOPS rarely goes to 8.

    I want to investigate what is creating this much Write IOPS before this becomes a disaster. Is here any idea of typical IOPS count overhead added by Blackberry device?

    Guys please help. How to investigate this issue?

    Size of the Database is 53 GB while LUN size is 300 GB.

    There was an old RIM whitepaper that put the number for Exchange 2003 at 3.64 times a normal user.  In Exchange 2007, that number is more like 2.9.  In the Exchange 2007 Mailbox Role Storage Calculator, about version 16.5 if I remember right, a field was added to each mailbox profile that you could add a multiplier there.  That field still exists in The Exchange 2010 calculator, although the multiplier is a bit lower.
