Exchange 2003 Too much Write IOPS on a Mailbox Store. How to investigate? RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Dear Exchange Colleagues,

We have Exchange 2003 Infrastructure and having too much write IOPS on a Mailbox Store (for General Managers). Although the User count in it is just 40 (around 25 IOPS per user per second).

Each user has Blackberry device (we do have a BES v5). All Mailbox Stores are hosted on EMC CLARiiON CX4-120C SAN (on seperate LUNs on RAID-5 with FC Drives).

Write IOPS vary from 800 to 1500 while read IOPS rarely goes to 8.

I want to investigate what is creating this much Write IOPS before this becomes a disaster. Is here any idea of typical IOPS count overhead added by Blackberry device?

Guys please help. How to investigate this issue?

    Thanks,

  • There was an old RIM whitepaper that put the number for Exchange 2003 at 3.64 times a normal user.  In Exchange 2007, that number is more like 2.9.  In the Exchange 2007 Mailbox Role Storage Calculator, about version 16.5 if I remember right, a field was added to each mailbox profile that you could add a multiplier there.  That field still exists in The Exchange 2010 calculator, although the multiplier is a bit lower.
