Can you convert a generation 1 VM to a generation 2 VM on windows hyper-v 2008 r2?

    Question

  • We are having some performance issues with some VMs on a windows 2008 R2 hyper-v enterprise.

The VM's are both 2008 r2 enterprise and 2012 r2 datacenter which we want to convert to vdhx.

Do I have to be concerned if the VMs are made form BIOS based images?

Assuming vdhx is the same as generation 2.

We are hoping that by converting to vdhx (generation 2) that we will resolve our performance issues.

Please provide a link of detailed steps on how to do this??

  • Hi,

On Hyper-V 2008 R2, only Gen 1 is available. Gen 2 is supported on 2012 R2 and later OSes.

And as far as I know, the conversion is not supported.

My suggestion is to build new VMs and migrate data from the old one.

    Best Regards,

    Leo
