Windows 7 Explorer Crashes every time. Anyone Help? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Over the last 2 weeks I have been experiencing a very frustrating problem with Windows 7 Explorer. Below is an excerpt of the message from the Event viewer:

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Here is an excerpt from Application log in event viewer:

Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp: 0x4aeba271
Faulting module name: msdaipp.dll, version: 11.0.6715.60, time stamp: 0x4330617e
    Exception code: 0xc00000fd
    Fault offset: 0x000229a5
    Faulting process id: 0x%9
    Faulting application start time: 0x%10
    Faulting application path: %11
    Faulting module path: %12
    Report Id: %13

I have found "older" messages that provided fixes ranging from update the nVidia driver to remove registry settings. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Could this be some type of Trojan? I have run several scans using Trend Micro Internet Security pro and shows up nothing.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi JohnGM,

Msdaipp.dll is a module associated to WebDAV. You can temporary uninstall Microsoft Office software and Sharepoint Portal Server to see if the issue can be resolved.

If the issue persists, access Clean Boot to check the issue. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue.

Also, you can use ShellExView to disable related extensions of Windows Explorer:

    1. Download ShellExView v1.41 from the following link http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.zip

Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.

    2. Right-click the "shexview.zip" file, select "Extract All", the Extraction Wizard will prompt.

    3. Click Next, input "C:\ShellExView" (without the quotation marks) in the "Files will be extracted to this directory" textbox.

    4. Click Next and click Finnish.

    5. Open the "C:\ShellExView" folder and double-click the "shexview.exe" file. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions.

    6. Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard.

    7. Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes.

    8. Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Linda

  • Hi Linda,

I have performed a clean boot, but that did not stop the error from constantly happening again. I have also performed several scans for viruses, trojans and bots -- no luck in discovering any of those either. I did install ShellExView and disabled all non-microsoft extensions -- it still happens.

I have not un-installed Microsoft Office (running 2010 Office) yet -- but need it to get work done. Do you think MS-Office 2010 could be the culprit?

How is the msdaipp.dll file generated? Could I delete it and copy it from another Win7 32bit machine?

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp: 0x4aeba271

I sure appreciate any and all help! This is very frustrating and has been crashing Explorer for over 2 weeks.

  • Update: Using ShellExView, I was able to isolate all the non-Microsoft shell extensions running. Once I disabled them -- Explorer is now working again. Now, I just need to figure out which one of the non-MS shell extensions is causing the problem.

At least Explorer isn't crashing any more.

    Thanks Linda!

  • I've been experiencing this same Windows 7 explorer crash problem but it didn't start until the after the June 2010 Patch Tuesday which points solely to Microsoft. In fact, that is the very day the problem started and has been occuring ever since. Based on past experience with MS and their updates they probably 'broke' something with one of their updates as has happened too many times in the past. Luckily, I also have a Macbook that I can use that doesn't suffer from being exposed to MS problems (which seem to keep multiplying for some unknown reason). To prove that Windows has no idea what the real problem is here is the entry from the Event Log for the last time it crashed:

    Redmond... We have a problem.

I have the exact same experience - no problems with Explorer until the June update self installed. It is such a pain. Using my PC in the studio has become almost unworkable with this constant Explorer crash. I tried every fix I have been able to find - including disabling all 3rd part processes with Shexview. It just keep crashing away no matter what I do.

I think it is time to fix this Microsoft - don't blame other companies - if their application doesn't behave shut it down - not explorer for goodness sake.

Please help make this a priority somewhere

    http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it.

When the Windows Explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here. I take at the dump, maybe I can see the cause.

  • ShellExView was the only thing that worked for me as well. For some reason I did not have a Restore Point but I think I have fixed that now.

Everything else I tried (virus scan, clean boot, check disk, etc.) did not work. This was the ONLY solution to get Explorer to stop crashing. I'm so glad I came across this post after DAYS of searching. Thank you so much for this wonderful resource!

  • I too am having the same problem, I have noticed something funny though. I am on a corporate domain and explorer only crashes when I am using the search feature on a mapped network drive, after explorer crashes, there are multiple copies of that mapped drive in "My Computer" each with a different drive letter. I'm not sure if that is relevant or helps in any way. I have a dump file here.

  • Hi Mike,

you have an NULL Pointer read in the synceng.dll (Windows Briefcase Engine).

    BUCKET_ID: APPLICATION_FAULT_NULL_POINTER_READ_synceng!WriteVolume+5a

Others have it, too that's why you get a BucketID:

    WATSON_IBUCKET: 1695871918

    Contact the MS support.

I have a brand new windows7 computer with very few other programs loaded yet this option "ASSOCIATE A FILE TYPE OR PROTOCOL WITH A SPECIFIC PROGRAM" is broken. When you try to open it it fails.
    The only programs loaded are:
    Access97 (yes 97... a long story, don't ask)
    Office2007
    TrendMicro
    Screenhunter

This user has tested and established the problem is caused by an Access97 and Windows7 conflict.

Therefore there is unlikely to be a solution, other than undating Access.

What eventually fixed this was uninstalling the two sets of wireless drivers that were installed (I had replaced an older USB wifi adapter that had stopped working. So, after installing the new adapter, there were two sets of drivers installed.) After a reboot, and running through the driver setup for the new wifi adapter again, the Explorer crash went away.

    ok, thanks for the Feedback.

Install the Sp1, because you're at RTM.

if you still get crashes, start regedit.exe and go to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\Explorer.exe,

create a new DWORD DumpType and set the value to 2 .

The WER service now generates a huger dump. Zip the new dumps and share them.

These are the links to my dump files. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Dennise,

you get a Heap Corruption: APPLICATION_FAULT_HEAP_CORRUPTION_FILL_PATTERN

Create a new txt file and post all between the ////////

    //////////////

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENTVERSION\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe]
    "GlobalFlag"=dword:02000100
    "PageHeapFlags"=dword:00000003

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\Explorer.exe]
    "DumpType"=dword:00000002

    /////////////////////////

rename the txt to .reg and make a double click to import it.

If you get new crashes, upload the new dmp files. They are no larger, so zip them first to reduce the size.

  • Andre,

If you could assist that would be much appreciated. I am having the same issues. Clean install of Win7x64 Ult. I installed my core utilities (7zip, MS av, mozy) and I can tell you that the crashes start immediately. I never saw this issue pre sp1.

Per your suggestion, i loaded the reg key and have the dumps available. I also loaded sxh viewer and disabled anything in pink.

  • Hi Dennise,

Use 7zip to compress the dmp into a 7z file (ULTRA ratio and LZMA2), this reduces the size.

If the file is still too large, upload it to Mediafire.com:

    http://www.mediafire.com/

    and post the link here.

  • Hi Andre,

These are the links to my dump files:

    1. With this one, my computer has adobe installed:

        http://www.mediafire.com/?x3o9y4jaaaabwfp

    2. With this one, my computer only has windows 7 and office 2007 installed

        http://www.mediafire.com/?6lwqg2imh2916ip

Thanks in advance Andre. I've been trying to figure out this issue for days. In case you wish to know, I developed a plug-in for Outlook, but everytime it is installed to a machine with windows 7(64 bit) and office 2007 installed, the windows explorer always crash everytime the outlook is open. I really want to know if the issue is my plug-in or there is just something wrong in my computer setup.

    Thanks again.

this tells me nothing usefull, only that Clipboard data are corrupted. This comes from 3rd party apps which copy data to the clipboard. The firefox 3.5 had a bug which caused such crash. so update the 3.6 or 4.0 to fix it if you use Firefox.

  • Hi Andre,

    To answer your question above:

    1. The dll does not belong to my plug-in. according to the net, it belongs to adobe. That's why i uninstalled adobe ang got the second dump file.

    2. I don't have a firefox, so not sure what is really happening there. I just have look at my plug-in and see if there's a part of it that is trying to access the clipboard.

Thanks heaps for all your help.

  • Hello André,

We have the same problem (crashing Windows Explorer) with a workstation of one of our clients:

Win7 prof. Dutch, connected to a Win2003 SBS (workgroup, not domain) 3 months old install..

We tried allmost everything; disabeling the shell items, harddisk test, etc. etc.) and the next step will be a re-install.....

We noticed this thread and hope you can help us.

We have installed your reporting reg and collected several dmp files and placed them on this Skydrive:

    http://cid-31d81fc831be3624.office.live.com/browse.aspx/Openbaar

If possible, can you analyse the dumpfile ????

Hope to hear from you soon,

    Best regards,

    Norbert

    My dump is available here:

  • Andre,

I know this is an old post for a reply now but I am having real problems here. The Explorer crashes when certain folders are opened or when it is kinda stressed.

I tried a few fixes, did not work, like the shellexview thing. when the crash happens everything else just freezes nothing at all works only the firefox or some other applications which were open will work. I'll have to use the task manager to end the explorer, which does not work every time, or log off from the computer and log on again which is pretty much like restarting the computer which results in closing of all the applications open at the time.

And yeah, I downloaded the reg file u suggested but I am not able to find the dump files if you could guide me to it I'll just upload it so you can take a look.

  • Thank you for replying Andre,

I did not do the memtest yet, saw it takes quite some time, but i did run the sfc/scannow. It did not show me any errors. You said the kernel32.dll file was corrupted, will the problem be solved if i just copy the same file from another system or something?

The sfc/scannow has the ability to replace corrupted file with a good copy, should I just try that?? Or find the file online, cause everything is available on the internet, and overwrite the existing one??

    Thank You so much!!

  • Shalom Andre,

My problem is as follow: Win 7, 64 bit, Word 2007, Norton Anti Virus, networked with another computer with the same operating system but word 2010.

All of a sudden, with no major changes in the system, my word 2007 started crashing every time I opened a file on the network (or even browsed the network's file share). Windows explorer does the same. This has been happening for a week or so. I tried to restore the computer to an earlier time and the restore did not succeed. Why would this happen out of nowhere. Does anyone have a solution? Xplorer2 (an explorer replacement) does not crash and works fine with the network)

I followed your instructions and produces a localdump file which can be accessed at the following address. Your help is most welcome. SY
