Hard drive considerations for Hyper V/ VMs RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm setting up a new 2012R2 server to run our VMs, does anyone have any advice re: hard disks? We currently have Raid 1 for the server that will Host the main OS and Raid 5 is running for our 'data' drives (using 4 x 1.2TB) my main question is, should I leave the R5 as is and create folders for my VM's & OS's on this Raid5 or should I 'break' the R5 config & setup the VHDs on separate physical disks? Maybe mirror them for resilience?

    Thanks in advance.

  • RAID5 is slow, especially with only 4 disks.  Go with RAID10.

You don't really need to RAID1 the host OS.  You could use those disks for VMs (6 disk RAID10) and install the free Hyper-V server (not Windows Server) on a SDCard or Flash drive.
