Hi mlross,
It is supported to use Lync 2013 client with SFB server .
You could use all features with SFB server in Lync 2013 client expect the feature per-populated, peer-to-peer video-based screen sharing, use prepared conversation templates, check spelling.

Hi Mlross,
Yes this should defenitely work , there is no issues on that , as Balasaheb suggested , most of the time you can see the client getting updated to Skype for business version. If you want to know the update which gets the client updated to the latest version here it is April 2015 CU16

Mlross,
Lync 2013 client automatically get updated to Skype for Business client as part of office updates but you can restrict update if you want to allow only Lync 2013 client.
I have not used Lync 2013 client with Skype for Business Server however there is no reason to not work Lync 2013 client with Skype for Business server.
