WSUS Design for Testing & Prod environments RRS feed

  • Question

  • Currently we have one WSUS server which is just for production Clients & Servers. I am trying to architect a design which incorporates updates into our vCloud Director environment also. Some of these vApps(environments with multiple VMs) are on VLAN backed & VCDNI networks. They will be able to hit our PROD WSUS server. I am trying to decide between Replica & Autonomous mode. Most of these environments are basically cloned from our PROD environment which has the same Computer Names & even same AD environment isolated from PROD. I am curious if anyone has ran into these same situations and could make any recommendations. I'm thinking of doing Autonomous mode since some of these environment have their own AD or building two servers in each environment with one being a peer replica from PROD & other WSUS server in that environment being autonomous.  Thanks in advance for any recommendations I am still doing some digging.

  • One KEY item I see here... "Most of these environments are basically cloned from our PROD environment which has the same Computer Names & even same AD environment isolated from PROD". This is a highly problematic scenario and *requires* an independent WSUS server to support.

Yes, I was thinking the WSUS replica model would probably be out the window in this instance. I was wondering if the most likely scenario would be setting up a WSUS server in environments like this in Autonomous mode with my PROD WSUS server. I plan on implementing 2012 R2 WSUS servers.
