System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 and server 2012 hyper-v replication RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does anyone know if configuration manager SP1 site servers can be replicated to DR using server 2012 hyper-v replication and in fact are the other members of System Center 2012 SP1 Suite supported for hyper-v replication

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 is fully supported with Hyper V Replica. I have implemented the solution several times and it works well. Hyper V doesn't really care that it is a ConfigMgr server. It's just a VHDx file that is updated on a defined schedule.

Whether you would want to implement this for your SCCM Distribution Points is a different question.

  • Hi Gerry, can i ask if you have the Database co-hosted on the site server and have a Hyper-V replica of this or is it just the Primary Site server?

We have the DB on a separate 2012 cluster so could use a replica for the Primary Site server but not the Clustered DB. The only supported DR solution appears to be backup/restore, either from the site maintenance task or SQL maintenance backup task so would be interested to see if you've had success with Hyper-V replica of a Primary with co-hosted DB.

    Thanks

  • Hi Webbomonkey,

Yes, I have implemented Hyper V replica of SCCM Primary Site Servers with SQL installed on the same server. It is supported in certain scenarios (eg only use one VHD file - no additional disks) but is certainly not the ideal way to implement high availability in your SCCM environment. You should also implement site maintenance task to backup your site and implement regular SQL database dumps. However this solution can get you out of trouble quickly. If your Primary Site server failed you could turn on the replica and restore the site from backup if required.

Hyper V replica is primarily designed to replicate VMs that don't change much.
