Serial Ports & Startup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am working on a program that accesses an external device through a serial connection, and enables the RTS line of the connection to activate the external device which in this case is a rather loud siren. I have run into the issue where when I restart my Vista machine, the serial ports become active which in turn turns on the siren. I can't have this, as it creates a false alarm with the system.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening, I've checked for a command in the bcd and the the bios but haven't had any luck yet. When I was testing on an XP machine I managed to reduce it to just a few pulses as windows logged in by adding /noserialmouse and /fastdetect to the boot.ini file. Idealy, I would like for the ports to remain untouched during startup so that they are only being used when my application is running.

    Thanks for your help.
