Client and adressbook synchronization RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys,

So we have a bunch of Lync 2013 clients on our Lync 2013 server environment and we are rolling out windows 10 with the newest Skype for Business client. (Skype for Business 2015 on-prem is scheduled to be deployed within 2 months)

Our early Windows 10 pilots have seen issues with adressbook synchronization within the new Skype for Business client which Lync 2013 clients does not face.

Have read a few posts and created a new clientpolicy for websearchonly and the issue seems to be gone but is this by design? I mean shall every skype for business deployment with new clients change the default setting which means that they can use download the cached copy and/or do onlinesearch? and it will probably have some impact on the front-end servers right?

So, shall we change the global policy to utilize only websearch or what is the recommended approach?

    Thanks!

  • Hi, So in other words if one is migrating the client from lync to sfb client one have to remove the function to download the addressbook and fully utilize the online search? sfb client has no cached addressbook functionality?

    Hi zid,

Actually, SFB client has cached address book function.

For the Lync client policy, by default, this value is set to Websearchandfiledownload only. By having this option what it does is a local address book cache file from each client will be downloaded from the server. After that the Lync client will use the local cache. In turn it will use the websearch functionality to download the user photos only.
So it takes 24 hours of time to have a fully updated local cache files.

When we have a web search only option it does a direct lookup to the RTCAB database which will give the fully updated information for the Lync/SFB clients.

  • Hi zid,

Regarding your issue, the issue is caused by that the address book not synchronization for the new SFB client in your environment.

Change the client policy to “websearchonly” is not the by design behavior, we suggest you change this policy, the main purpose is to update the address book of SFB , because when you set this to “websearchonly”, then Lync client will search the address book form SFB BE database directly.

In addition to the suggestions above, you could also try the following methods:
    1. Run the command line in SFB management shell: Update-CsAddressBook
    2. You could also try to add the registry HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\v GalDownloadInitialDelay /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f to force the address book download.
