Licensing for UAT Project Server 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a production environment of Microsoft Project Server 2013 and we have acquired below licenses already.

Microsoft Project Server 2013, Microsoft SharePoint 2013, Microsoft SQL Standard 2012, SharePoint Standard CAL, Enterprise CAL and SQL Server CAL

We are planning to deploy a second environment for development and testing purpose. We called it UAT platform where it is limited to a few IT and business lead users' access and would like to know the license requirement for this UAT platform. Of course, we can purchase the same set of software license as production system but looking for a more cost effective way to do so. I have called local Microsoft representative and he suggests me to obtain Visual Studio Professional which can cover all required server licenses. What I need to do is purchase the sufficient CAL for user access.

As I am not familiar with Visual Studio licensing scheme, is it a feasible and cost effective way to set up the development environment with user access for testing.

  • Hi Jonathan Luk

If your users of the UAT are already licenced for the live environment, then you don't need to do anything, and they already have the relevant CALs - you'll still need server licences of course (which is where the visual studio licences come in).

There used to be a clause in MS licencing for non-production systems which allowed you to use the software without a licence - this was for volume licence customers only, but I don't know if it still exists...

I think you have done the right thing by asking your MS rep - but also try and find an MS licencing specialist to speak to.
