Can Skype for Business act as a relay for Voicemail to the O365 UM? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good Day Experts,

We are facing an issue where one of out client is facing the following:

    https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Exchange-Team-Blog/New-date-for-discontinuation-of-support-for-Session-Border/ba-p/607853

We have the following call flow currently:

    3rd party PBX  - 3rd party SBC - TLS - O365

We are trying to validate if this is possible at all:

    3rd party PBX - SFB 19 (acting as a relay) - O365 UM

Can someone from the esteemed panel confirm if this is possible?

  • Hi,

Using Skype for Business on-premise server is an option, but I think it maybe not a relay. With this option, Skype for Business is the connector between a customer PBX on premises and the Office 365 data center, it moves voice to Skype for Business Server.

Please refer to the following blogs.

  • Thanks Shaw for the response.

I believe Option 3(the category we fall in) for the 1st blog mentioned has been scrapped by Microsoft

the 2nd blog is more of a hybrid style setup.

If a Phone extension exists on a 3rd party PBX and there is a corresponding User Profile on SFB/Lync, would this work.

More specifically, if there is a 3rd party aka Cisco Call Manager has an extension on a phone say 9999871234 with a Remote Destination Profile associated to a Remote Destination which in essence sends the call to a SIP URI (say john.doe@contoso.com) on SFB and SFB is configured for John Doe with SIP address- sip:john.doe@contoso.com and has Line URI as tel:+19999871234;ext=9871234;ms-skip-rnl. The user is UM online enabled.

Will there still be a configuration that SFB can have to accept calls from the Cisco Call Manager and pass it to the UM Online?

  • Hi hipande,

I’m not very familiar with Cisco call manager, but for on-premise Skype for Business users, they could use Cloud Voicemail, however, the om-premise server should deploy hybrid with Online, it is a requirement.

    Please refer to this article:
