About auto-updating Skype through WSUS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I want to ask is it possible to download Skype updates through WSUS server. And only if I approve the required update to users, it will automatically install on user's computer without asking for administrator password.

  • Hi svt 11

    See this post: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/cdcebe79-97f6-4b1c-95f9-1eb2a8c1d13d/skype-and-wsus?forum=winserverwsus

no, not really, since the updates for 'Skype for Windows Desktop', aren't released via WSUS.

Skype for Windows Desktop, is not maintained via WSUS channels - instead it's a self-update model, like OneDrive NGSC, and a lot of newer software titles from MSFT these days.

If you have some other software deployment management method, used for deploying the software, you can use that for maintaining it also.

    Regards

    Simon

  • Problem with Skype actually is that it auto-updates and on 30 computers it's asking for admin password. And it started very frequently to do this. I have active directory one domain and it's really annoying. What I have done is to stop Windows Update on every computer through GPO. I don't know if it will work, but it's really annoying with these updates.

  • Hi,

Are you using "Skype for desktop" not "Skype for business"?
If so, Skype for desktop updates is not one of windwos update, stop windows update will not be able to achieve your goal.

You may need to find the registry key which could turn off automatic updates with Skype for desktop or a boot script to disable automatic updates with GPO.

Or this link may be helpful:

  • I have disabled ui.skype.com through DNS settings.

I have disabled updates from Microsoft Store. Btw newest skype force me to install it from Microsoft Store...

Also, where it is located? Which directory, because following this guide I can't see these files in %temp%

Prevent Skype from sneakily downloading update files in the background.
Skype downloads updates silently (and sneakily) to your temp folder. To ensure it can no longer do this:
    – Navigate to %temp%
    – Delete SkypeSetup.exe
    – Create a new blank text file in Notepad, and use File -> Save As to save it as SkypeSetup.exe
    – Right click your new file, choose Properties -> Security -> Advanced -> Change permissions -> Add -> type “Everyone” -> Choose “Deny” -> OK -> OK

    Thank you.
