Cannot add DC as Host in non-trusted domain-Why? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Sirs:

I posted this a day ago on the VMM-General forum and got no replies. :-(  I'm hoping for better success here. :-)

When trying to add a Hyper-V DC with VMs as a resource in SCVMM 2012 I get the following error: <server name> cannot resolve with DNS, ID: 404.  Here are some details:

    1. Resource Location.  The Hyper-V DC host is in an untrusted domain (ex. domain B).

    2. Credentials.  I created a Run As Account with the Domain name and administrator name for domain B along with the password for the administrator (domainB\administrator).

    3. Target Resources.  I get the error if I enter the FQDN (<computername> or the IP address.

Note: Interestingly, I get the following error if I use the IP address: cannot resolve with DNS.  I wonder, why is the program trying to resolve an IP address with DNS?

    4. Ping works.  On the SCVMM 2012 computer, which is on domain A I can successfully ping the target resource (ping <computername>

    5. NSLookup works.  On the SCVMM 2012 computer NSLookup displays the correct non-authoritative answer (nslookup <computername> Name: <computername>; Address:

    6. Trust. There is actually a one-way trust between domains A and B.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
