Getting Outlook Anywhere working for cutover to Office 365 RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • SBS 2k8 with Exchange 2k7 migrating to Office365 which /requires/ Outlook anywhere to work in order to do a cut over migration. These are my (occluded) notes from following the directions at:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2008/06/20/3405633.aspx "How does Outlook Anywhere work (and not work)?"

Figured I should share incase anyone else goes through this... nightmare... I'm amazed how many problems I found and how long this took.

Note: Using "workgroup" to mean the internal domain name, e.g. CONTOSO vs the local domain e.g. contoso.local vs the global domain e.g. contoso.com

    Outlook conectivity test fails:

Attempting to ping the MAPI Mail Store endpoint with identity: mail.mydomain.com:6001.
The attempt to ping the endpoint failed.
Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it

    Additional Details

The RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE error (0x6ba) was thrown by the RPC Runtime process.
    Elapsed Time: 2824 ms.

The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39}
to the user workgroup\username SID (S-1-5-21-502578937-2481866403-3250494176-1142) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC). This security permission can be modified using the

    Component Services administrative tool.

    suggests testing connectivity with RPCPing:

    rpcping -t ncacn_http -o RpcProxy=mail.mydomain.com -P "username,workgroup,*" -H 1 -F 3 -a connect -u 9 -v 3 -s mail.mydomain.com -I "username,workgroup,*" -e 6004

KB952580 installed? Not approved... superceeded? No outstanding updates... Others with fully updated server have same issue.

    C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
    #127.0.0.1       localhost
    192.168.0.8 servername
    192.168.0.8 servername.workgroup.local

has no effect. Which makes sense as

    telnet -e e mail.mydomain.com 6001
    telnet -e e mail.mydomain.com 6002
    telnet -e e mail.mydomain.com 6004

    all DO return
    ncacn_http/1.0
(hit e then type quit to get out)

On the Mailbox servers: a DWORD  entry needs to be created on each Mailbox server named "Do Not Refer HTTP to DSProxy" at HKLM\System\CCS\Services\MSExchangeSA\Parameters\

and the value set to 1

The PeriodicPollingMinutes key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeServiceHost\RpcHttpConfigurator\ needs setting to zero to prevent

RpcHttpConfigurator from updating the Valid Ports key automatically.

but restarting IIS after doing all that stuff DOES work!

    rpcping -t ncacn_http -o RpcProxy=mail.mydomain.com -P "username,workgroup,*" -H 1 -F 3 -a connect -u 9 -v 3 -s mail.mydomain.com -I "username,workgroup,*" -e 6004
