If you are going to automate the Project ID using a Server Side event handler to update a custom field, the custom field will still be editable by the PM. This is probable not desired.  To fully automate project ID creation and prevent the PM from modifying the field, you will have to
implement a workflow in combination with a Project Server event handler. The event handler will generate the project id, and by using a workflow you can set the (workflow controlled) custom field to read-only.

    Hope that helps.

  • Hi,

besides Amit response, another way of achieving the same is through project server group settings because implementing workflow and server side event handler are not always a prefered solution. that due to lack of technical experitise or the effort it requries.

i would suggest to prepare your project projcess in a way where you can allow certain set of users, may be project manager etc., to enter the project id of the project. You can make it read-only for other group of people, such as Team Lead or Team Members, so they will not be able to modify the value.

PWA -> server settings -> in group settings, under categories section -> select the category associated with that group -> expand project -> uncheck Edit project summary fields. and the users associated with that particular group will no longer able to modifty any custom fields.

    hope this helps.
