Windows Update Lost History RRS feed

  • Question

  • I opened Windows Update and discovered the update recent history missing. Instead of dates, both the latest check for updates and updates were installed windows showed "Never."    At the bottom of WU window, the installed updates are all listed.

I'm concerned that WU will now attempt to reinstall updates already installed.  Is this something I need to worry about or should I just leave it set for automatic installations every day.  Not sure if this will repair itself with the next install (probably Defender Definitions) or how the history got erased on this 2 year old clean install of Win 7 Home Premium, x64.

  • Hi,

The issue can be caused if the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder is cleaned up. This folder contains, such as downloaded update packages and update history. Cleaning the folder helps to free up your C drive space. A certain application may do that, for example, Disk Cleanup Tool, Microsoft Fixit or third-party clean up tool.

However, it will not damage Windows Update function.

    Hope this helps.

  • Despite having lost a history of installs, the WU appears normal and no further action is necessary.
