  • Question

  • RTF files fail to open through Microsoft Office word viewer 2003, after an recent Microsoft security update (KB3127962). Below is the error we get. It is impacting our business. Quickly, let us know how to get over it?

    https://1drv.ms/i/s!AgltaQkxND6XnBeE35i1cGIAd7Gz

    Error in the box:
This error message may be the result of a corrupt table in the current document.
You can recover the contents of the document and the table by closing the document, and then reopening it by using the Open and Repair command in the Open dialog box. To find the Open and Repair command, click the File tab, click Open, click the down arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair. After the file is repaired, the corruption or incorrect formatting of all tables in the document should be corrected.
If the document still has errors in a table after a repair, you may want to examine each table to see if any text is too long for any given cell or row, or if an incomplete table was created or imported into the document.

  • Hi,

Does this issue happen to all RTF file or certain RTF files?

What if we try temporarily uninstalling the Microsoft security update (KB3127962) and then testing it again?

In addition, Microsoft has discontinued the older versions of Office viewers (including the 2003 version). Microsoft will not provide hotfix, service pack, or security update support for these products. See the following article for more information:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/979860

To get better support and user experience, it's highly recommended to upgrade to a supported Office Word Viewer. To obtain the latest Word Viewer, please refer to the following article:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/891090

Thank you for your understanding and support.

    Regards,

    Steve Fan

  • I forgot to mention that a possible workaround for this issue is to open the file in WordPad. Please let us know whether this helps and retains formatting.

  • Hi Erik,

no, WordPad is not an option for a view cases I'm working on, because WordPad does not support ContentControls for example or field codes.

    Looking forward for a solution,

    Regards,

  • I assume that kb3141490 does not include the security patches contained in kb3128044 and kb3127962?

So after installing kb3141490 we should re-install these?  Currently I have kb3127962 approved for removal on WSUS (after it caused havoc) and have declined kb3128044.

    Kris.
