promoted moss server to DC and cant access sharepoint RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Not knowing that it would cause problems i promoted the moss server to be a Domain controller and now we cant access sharepoint.

I found afterwards that the sharepoint services administration service wasnt starting and would not start.  I also noticed that somehow it had deleted a a bunch of local groups on the server:  WSS_WPG, WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG and WSS_ADMIN_WPG.

I've recreated the groups but what accounts are meant to be members?  I've added the ones I thought were correct and can now start the sharpoint services adminstration service - but still cant access the sharepoint.

I've tried all the usual tricks like restarting the server, restarting IIS but its still coming up as "service unavailable".

    Help! :(

  • Once IIS is installed you can't upgrade the server to a DC.

This is something that in SharePoint goes back to version 2 if not before (http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com/Lists/v2%20WSS%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=52)

There's no fix other than re-building completely. You need to remove all traces of SharePoint; all traces of the database used by SharePoint (if that is on the same server); and IIS and only then upgrade to a DC and then re-install the above set of routines/apps again.

Safer is to wipe the entire server clean with FDisk as then you can be 100% certain that everything that might affect the succesful DC specification has been removed. (This is overkill but completely safe)
