Recently Used Programs resets itself every time! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a new computer from eMachines with Vista Basic on it.

Every time I login, my Start menu's Recently Used Programs resets itself to the following list:

    *Welcome Center

    *Windows Media Player

    *Windows Photo Gallery

    *Windows Anytime Upgrade

    *Windows Calendar

    *Windows Meeting Space

    *Windows Easy Transfer

I can remove them from the list, but they show up every time I login!

How do I make it stop doing this?

  • Right-click on the Start button, and then click Properties, click on 'Start menu' and check the two boxes listed under privacy

  • They are checked.  It remembers what I use until I reboot.  Then it resets it all to its factory set list.

  • I am beginning to wonder if this problem occurs on all computers bought through eMachines.  Anyone else experiencing this?

  • I suggest you trying the Vista Manager 3rd party software. It allows you repairing such problems.

    Good luck

  • Wow, for $40 I can attempt to solve it...I think I'll just suffer; it's not that bad, really.  Thanks, though!

  • You just need a registry tweak, described here:

  • Thanks, this seems to be working so far.  I'll post again within the next week if I see it fails.

    God bless!

  • Seems like a week later already.  It's been one evening.  Amazing how time flies.

It's working so far.  If I have troubles, you'll probably see me back on this topic...until then, just assume everything's alright!  Thanks, again, Keith!

  • Okay, so it's doing fine with remembering programs, now.  Only one problem.  The Backup and Restore Center is on my list.  I can remove it, but it comes back when I reboot.  I don't even use the backup and restore center.  Why's it showing up on my list?

  • Good question.  It's on mine, too.  I never noticed before, but now it will bug me!!!  Thanks!!!!

I'll look into getting it off there -- but I'm juggling a few projects right now -- please be patient.

  • I've also noticed that certain programs like Microsoft Access 2003, Windows Photo Gallery, and Windows Media Player don't ever appear on the list, even though I'm using them, but other programs like Yahoo! Jukebox, Noteworthy Composer 2, and Paint do.  I'm pretty sure Windows XP remembered when I used those programs.  Why doesn't Vista?

Edit Number 3: I was wrongAll programs make the list, but for some reason, many of them take longer than others to make it on the list.

  • As for the Backup and Restore Center, I'm wondering if that is being accessed each time the computer goes into hibernation or is shut down.
