Cmd context menu invisible RRS feed

  • Question

  • when i right click my command prompt window no context menu appears but i'm still able to click on the position where some entry should be and that option works. but i remember times when i was able to see the menu in win7 - about 4-6 months ago...

for example: i found the "usual" position for close, scroll and maximize. everything works but i'm not able to see the menu.

i have changed my win7 performance settings to "best performance" (classic windows style) and then i saw the menu again, but i don't want the old style!

is there a way to make the menu visible again when aero and so on is enabled?

I simply had to reinstall windows... there was no easier way, but I found out that a Context Menu Handler edit was wrong.

    I hope this helps someone.

  • Hi,

Before going any further, I would like to verify these situations:

1 How the command prompt window looks like now?

2 Does this issue only occur in Command Prompt?

This issue can be caused by incompatible programs or device drivers. I suggest trying these steps:

1 Login with Clean Boot or Safe Mode to see if the same issue occurs

2 Update graphics card driver and BIOS.

3 run SFC /SCANNOW to check if system files has broken:

1)Click the Start button and type "Command Prompt" in the search box.

2)Right click Command Prompt to run as Administrator.

3)Type: sfc /scannow and press Enter to scan the whole disk.

4 Create a new user account and login with it

    ====================

    1) Click the Start Button, type User Accounts in the start search pane and press Enter.

    2) Click Manage user accounts.

    3) Click Create a new account, and type the name.

    4) Choose account type as Computer administrator.

    5) Click Create Account.

    6) Log off and log on with the new account.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hi,

I just noticed that this thread is still available here - that's good:

last year i was so annoyed that i simply reinstalled win7 and now i got the same problem again and i dont know why!

Now i tried all of your suggestions:
    1) Diagnostic boot: everything worked fine! (yes there was a context menu!)

Clean Boot (just MS services): no context menu

    2) My graphics card driver is up to date ATI Catalyst 11.9 / Bios quite old and there are no newer drivers / firmware

    3) sfc checked everything without any errors

    4) i tried this with three accounts: my own, the builtin administrator account and a new one i created 10 min ago -> same behaviour, no context menu in cmd

I think it could have something to do with AERO theme! because with the classic windows style it works perfectly.

    Here some screens:
