Cleaning up windows update

how do I remove old Windows update files?

Leave those files present, if you are short on storage, you can reinstall Windows but the boatload of updates will remain the same.
some have reported 60GB in that folder

the OP might want to consider disk cleanup which is another tool in Windows
Cleanup is present in XP up, this page applies to xp and up

No it does not. The link you posted is specifically for Windows 8/8.1 Did you not notice that this is the Vista forum? How would instructions for Windows 8/8.1 possibly help someone running Vista? No it does not. The link you posted is specifically for Windows 8/8.1 Did you not notice that this is the Vista forum? How would instructions for Windows 8/8.1 possibly help someone running Vista? You really need to pay attention when posting responses.

there is a combo box on the top right for to select older SKUs of Windows
That is a list control, not a combo box and if you knew it was there why didn't you use to select the correct version for this thread in the first place?
