Distribution Manager failed to install distribution point RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I have looked through these forums, and I've seen that people have had the same issue as I'm experiencing but their solutions didn't find my issue.

    Environment:
    System Center 2012 Configuration Manager

    SCCM-CMSS01:

    • Windows 2008 R2      SP1 - Fully Patched
    • SCCM Site Server
    • SQL Server 2008      R2 SP1 CU6

    SCCM-CMDP03:

    • Windows 2008 R2      SP1 - Fully Patched

I have made SCCM-CMSS01 a Member of the Local Administrators Group on SCCM-CMDP03.

Firewall is disabled on all servers - verified

User Account Control is disabled on all server - verifed

I am attempting to deploy the Distribution Point Role to SCCM-CMDP03 (letting SCCM install and configure IIS)

When I do it fails, I get the following in the DistMgr.log

    ********************************************************

It looks like an RPC error, but I think I'm actually missing something fundamental in my setup as the only DP I can get to install is the one on the Site Server (which I don't want).

On SCCM-CMSS01 I get the following in the Event Log

    ********************************************************

On 7/11/2012 12:11:19 PM, component SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER on computer sccm-cmss01.online.xxxx.yy reported: Distribution Manager failed to install distribution point ["Display=\\SCCM-CMDP03.xxxx.yy\"]MSWNET:["SMS_SITE=UL1"]\\SCCM-CMDP03.xxxx.yy\ on computer SCCM-CMDP03.XXXX.YY.

Possible cause: Distribution Manager does not have sufficient rights to the computer.
Solution: Verify that the site server computer account is administrator of the computer.

    Thanks in advance,

  • So I abandoned having Config Manager install the role using Site Server Account and setup a Server Role Installation Account.

    This seems to have worked.

I'm now having an issue with the two default packages replicating, but atleast the DP is deployed...

  • I know you fixed this but just for reference the errors above look to be a problem with WMI, so try running wbemtest.exe. I believe the error is RPC is unavailable (1722).

  • I used a Installation Account instead of using the System Account.

No root cause found, but I did work around it.

  • Anyone else seen this issue? I've got multiple DPs and they all worked OK except the one at my site (of course). Same error message as above.

  • Even I had the same problem.. tried with installation account which is an admin on DP server and still face the issue. Later added the the primary computer account manually to the WMI security permission and configured inheritance on root. Later re-installed DP and it was successful.

Try re-assigning permissions for WMI. Would work.. all the best.

    other options are

    1. check IIS 6 Metabase compatibility feature and IIS 6 WMI compatibility feature of IIS.

    2. Disable annd enable BITS on DP

  • Hi,

I also met with the same issue and it took almost two days to resolve the issue

The soultion was the behaviour of the webdev in server 2012

In 2008 just have to install the webdev but in Server 2012 the Webdev, the installed component has to be enabled from the IIS, which has resolved my issue

So please try this and update me back

    Thanks

  • HI,

Solution: Verify that the site server computer account is administrator of the computer.

I'm trying to add DP role to our Site DC. So do i add SCCMSvr account like this?

    Net localgroup <group> <domain name>\<computer name>$ /ADD

Do i have to delete the failed DP and re add?

  • hi to all, I have a similar problem in a just installed SMS 2012r2 (I am testing it in trial mode to evaluate if it will be useful for our company or not). The installation was extremely long and complex, it takes about 3 days. And after that i have the distribution point failing.... I am disappoined most of all because I expect this product to be usefol to get order in the organization, but for now I noticed that the product it self needs something to get order with his packages and dependecies... here is the error:

  • Should there be a screenshot? If so: it is not displayed.
It does not take three days in order to set it up. It's a complex product and requires some knowledge, but it can be set up within one business day at max.

sorry, I discovered that I cannot attach images.. o here is the error from event viewer:

On 19/02/2016 14:32:17, component SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER on computer WIN-8LG093SACO4.AD.DS reported:  Distribution Manager failed to install distribution point ["Display=\\AD.DS\"]MSWNET:["SMS_SITE=FAP"]\\AD.DS\ on computer AD.DS.

Possible cause: Distribution Manager does not have sufficient rights to the computer.

Solution: Verify that the site server computer account is an administrator on the distribution point computer

I saw that is a complex product, but exists much other complex products that can be installed in minutes with total automatic control on dependecies too...  of course I agree that using them needs klowledge; just like an OS needs a package manager capable to threat all the packages in the same way assuring all the dependeces needed.. In 2016 sounds strange to install a product in this way wich means that each installation will be problably different... this is a bad thing in my personal opinion of course.
