Windows 10 Start Menu Layout with NO Tiles at all. LayoutModification.xml not working RRS feed

  • Question

  • So ive read a few articles on creating LayoutModification.xml

    and Export-StartLayout -Path C:\  powershell command.

    However if i Export strart menu with no tiles, or modify a XML to remove tiles when new user longs on   Windows Store, Settings and Edge still get pinned to it.  I guess they get pinned by some other action in login process.How do i do this ?

    (On a side note, this new Start menu is absolute  ***** from Admin point of view, there is not easy way of controlling it.

    the height of it, or to add Downloads or Documents or Networks link to it via GPO.

    moreover its more reliable to open Win32 Explorere and brows to network a share then doing it from New XML start, because it will likely glitch and lose the long typed in path or worse will freez and wont open )

  • Hi Vladimir2989,

    The Microsoft Edge and Windows Store pinned items should be added back by the user profile initialization.

    For the xml file, have you checked the article below?

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/mt171092%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396#layoutmodification_xml

    I replied in another thread regarding how to remove the pinned items about Microsoft Edge and Windows Store:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a6e07628-7596-41b3-bfb1-f765710af1cf/remove-edge-and-windows-store-from-user-profiles-windows-10-rtm?forum=win10itprosetup

    Generally there would be two ways:

    1. Customize defualt user profile;

    2. Take use of group policy

    There should be shortage for both of them, please take a further look.

    Regards

  • 1) XML file editing don't work with Task bar icons, Cortana search box (hiding or making it an icons) or Windows Store, Settings and Edge apparently

    2) Group policy is either all or noting, use of group policy would mean that users cant change things for them self.

    the only option left is to look in to Windows System Image Manager etc  from the post you mentioned.

    So much effort to get rid of few Icons/tiles .....

  • I have also tried to create LayoutModification.xml with no tiles at all with no success.

    But I have found a simle solution. Just create a tile for a folder something like C:\hagsfdasdfjafsd and then export your layout. On a new PC after importing that LayoutModification.xml you will have a clean start :)

  • Sorry for long answer. Hope it's not too late. Here it is:

    <LayoutModificationTemplate Version="1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/LayoutModification">
     <LayoutOptions StartTileGroupCellWidth="6" />
     <DefaultLayoutOverride>
     <StartLayoutCollection>
     <defaultlayout:StartLayout GroupCellWidth="6" xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout">
     <start:Group Name="" xmlns:start="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/StartLayout">
     <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="0" Row="0" DesktopApplicationID="C:\jshdgfjshdgf" />
     </start:Group>
     </defaultlayout:StartLayout>
     </StartLayoutCollection>
     </DefaultLayoutOverride>
    </LayoutModificationTemplate>

    It's just a fake path. You do not need to put anything there.

    If no tiles at all is specified in xml template, Windows does not apply it for some reason. Didn't check that in 1703, maybe something has changed already.
