How to disable (block) remote desktop (i.e. RDC) from my Windows XP? RRS feed

  • Hi,

    I user a Microsoft XP computer to connect to a remote server using MSTSC. I want to disable (or block) the MSTSC on my XP machine. How can i do this? (Please note that I want to disable MSTSC on the client).

  • Open the local security settings by typing secpol.msc in the run box.

    Click on Software restriction policies, Additional Rules.

    Right click on a blank area of the right hand pane and select new path rule.

    Browse to mstsc.exe. Make sure the security level is on dissallowed and then click OK.

    You should do the same for system32\dllcache\mstsc.exe.

  • Thanks... it worked.

    One thing more, can we customize (change) the message which is displayed when running MSTSC? After adding the rule, i get following message:

    "Windows cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy. For more information, open Event Viewer or contact your system administrator."
