Redirect Windows Logs and Crashdumps away from the System Partition. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to resolve frequent crashes on XP SP3, running SteadyState and Windows Disk Protection. Unfortunately, when an improper shutdown occurs, WDP discards all changes to the disk, including Logs and Crashdumps.

The prefered option would be to redirect Windows Logs and Crashdumps to another partition.

Is there any way to do it?

  • Seems, it is quite easy.

    With regedit,

for Logs, change the Value "File" at:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Security]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\System]

and for Dumps, change the Values "DumpFile" and "MinidumpDir" at:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl]

    and restart.

AS ALWAYS, EDITING THE REGISTRY CAN CAUSE DISASTER.
