WSUS Console installation on a Windows 7 client RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are using Windows Server 2012 R2 and installed WSUS.

Is there a way to access the console [other than RDP] on a Windows 7 client?

With WSUS 3, I could install the console locally.

    Thanks

Both of the answers given so far are partially correct.

    • There are no RSAT tools for Windows Server 2012 on Windows 7.
    • The RSAT tools for Windows 7 do not contain a WSUS console.

Depending on what you want to do from the remote WSUS console...

    • You can manage some of a WSUS v6 installation from a WSUS v3 standalone console. (Be sure to patch the console-only installation with KB2734608 before connecting to the WSUS v6 server.
    • You cannot do local publishing from a Windows 7/WSUS v3 console to a WSUS v6 server. (e.g. using SCUP, LUP, WPP, et. al.)

  • Hi,

To manager a server remotely, we can use the Remote Server Administration Tools.

To download RSAT for Windows7 SP1, please click the link below,

  • I'm running WSUS on a 2012 r2 server and I also run the console on my Win 7 workstation. I think I had to install the administrative tools in order to get the MMC snap-in. You will also need dot net version 2 if you want to run reports. I found out the hard way that you can't install dot net 2.0 if you have installed any newer versions. If you have newer versions, you'll need to uninstall them, install 2.0 and then re-install the other versions.

There may be other requirements that I've forgotten. Hope this helps anyway. Good luck
