Distributed Cache - is it needed on a farm with 1 WFE? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We have 1 WFE and 1 APP, We have been experiencing issues with what we think is Distributed Cache related. As we have only 1 WFE I'm wondering if there is any benefit having it enabled (activated through SharePoint > Services on Server >WFE >Distributed Cache - Started)

    Thanks

  • Yes, the existence of at least one Distributed Cache server is required.  Its used for things like caching authentication tokens, so if its not there you will get prompted much more frequently for authentication.  It not just for fault tolerance.

  • Hi range juice jones.

Distributed Cache service is either required by or improves performance of the following features:
    • Authentication
    • Newsfeeds
    • OneNote client access
    • Security Trimming
    • Page load performance

Which kind of issue(s) are you experiencing?

    Bye.

  • Hi

<< The distributed cache feature is enabled by default and the Distributed Cache service is automatically started on all web and  application servers in a farm. Distributed cache improves performance by:
    · Caching social data, such as news feeds.
    · Caching authentication tokens.
In very large environments distributed cache can be offloaded to dedicated servers. >>

  • The SharePoint CUs do NOT include the App Fabric cache CUs.  If you are experiencing issues with your distributed cache then applying the App Fabric patches is a good idea.
