Windows Explorer has stopped working and I can't figure out how to fix it, can anyone help?

Question

I've had my computer for about 2 or 3 years now. I've done a number of different scans and restores but even when I restore it back to a few months before this started it still happens. Its my family computer which is the crappy part or I'd just do a disk reboot. So if anyone can help I will love them forever. Here is what it says under the Problems Reports and Solution.

Your issue is sometimes caused by a third-party extension. ShellExView can be useful to see which shell extensions have been introduced into Explorer. Read about it then scroll down near to the bottom to download the x86 (32-bit version here http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
When you run it, click on the column labelled Company to alphabetically sequence the entries. Let us assume that the Microsoft entries are bona fide and concentrate on the others. Is there anything else listed that is either unnecessary or unknown? If so, highlight it and click the red spot (top left) to disable it. You may find it easier to disable them all, then re-enable them (green spot) one at a time and try Explorer until the culprit is found.

Hi,
Certain things you can try are to find out the root cause of the problem are given below.
1. Have a look whether you can reproduce the problem in safe mode.
Start your computer in safe mode
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
If behavior doesn’t persist in safe mode, it indicates that a third party program or service is preventing you from performing the action as supposed to.
To validate or determine which service/startup item could be causing this, restart the computer and boot to desktop normally. Once done, perform clean boot.
2. Clean Boot prevents software conflicts by preventing the startup items and non Microsoft services from loading. This way you can safely follow the process of elimination to check which application is causing this behavior.
Refer:
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: Ensure that you put your computer back to normal startup mode after completing the troubleshooting steps. Steps are available in the article given above.
Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. ”- Marked as answer by Sabrina Shen Thursday, September 22, 2011 9:45 AM

Hi Bob. Your solution worked for me too. I was getting regular 'windows has stopped working' dialog box when trying to open folders in Vista. Ticked 'always show icons, never thumbnails' box (path:'organize>folder and search options>view' and then check 'always show icons' box) and have not had a problem since. Many thanks Bob.
