Default User Profile RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

We are working on creating a standard image for Windows 7. We have followed the article KB 973289 after making our various customisations on the default Administrator account. The copy profile does appear to work, once the system has restarted and completed the OOBE and Windows setup the folder C:\Users\Default has the files and folders customised as we want.

For reference we have deleted the Contacts, Downloads and Saved Games folder. Added My Documents shortcut to the Links folder and remove Downloads and Recent Places from that Links folder. We have also deleted all the folders under Favorites as our machines are not internet facing.

So the Default User directory appears to be as we want it.....however when a new user is created the new profile DOES NOT come from the Default User directory.

Is there a reg key which point the "Default Profile" to a particular profile as it cant be going to Default User!

    Any suggestions appreciated

  • Hi,

Customizing the Default user configurations based on the build-in Default user profile should be different if the Default profile is copied from another profile. Now we could confirm that we are not able to simply change the contents manually to change the configuration of the copied Default user profile. You may need to customized a user profile and run sysprep to copy it to the Default profile again.

  • Hi,

Configurations the of Default User are defined by Registry values. The Registry hive is NTUSER.DAT under the Default User profile folder. However we cannot define the profile folders via Registry value. Therefore if you want to remove or add files or folders in new users’ profiles, just configuring Default User profile will not work.

No Registry solutions for this. You may create/remove files or folders via command lines and include these commands into the startup script for every users.

  • Arthur,

    Thanks for your reply.

If a New user is created, where do the standard Profile Folders that are shown in the profile come from? Is it possible to Hide or remove the folders from the source?

I understand that Contacts may be linked within Office so if it is recommended to keep this then we can investigate Folder Redirection instead. However Saved Games and Downloads we do not want in the profile or in the Links folder.

    Many Thanks

  • We found that the folder contents will be copied from the Default User. However the folder structure may be related to Registry. You may load the hive NTUSER.DAT under the Default folder. Then, change the following Registry branch.

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Or you can modify the Unattend.xml answer file and try sysprep again.

  • Hello

    Thanks for your reply

We have looked at the .Default key as mentioned above, however only the Downloads folder is within this directory that we want remove. There is no reference to Saved Games or Contacts.

If I remove the Downloads Key from the Default Users User Shell Folders the Downloads folder still appears when a new profile is created.

    Any suggestions?

    Many Thanks
