DPM 2019 - Is it possible to choose not to use RCT but Child Partition ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I'm continuing testing DPM2019 and there is a question I have: Can we choose to use Child Partition for a backup to tape instead of RCT ?

I'm asking that because I cannot recovery Hyper-V VMs from the tape when RCT is there. The backup to tape works fine (at least no error appears and the transfered data on the tape seems fine).

If I do a backup to tape of a VM that I didn't upgrade to the latest configuration version, it's all ok.

    That's why I'm asking that.

Thank you by advance for your answers.

    Regards.

  • Hello,

Unfortunately the only way to not use RCT is to either:

    • Have a Hyper-V host with a version below Windows Server 2016 (i.e. Windows Server 2012/2012 R2).
    • Keep the Hyper-V configuration version of the guest virtual machines below version 8.0.

    Hope that helps!

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Hello,

Ok, I take note of that.

Do you see by change why RCT is making the recovery of a protection group made via a backup to tape failing ?

VMs are on NTFS partition and the dpm disk I'm using (RAID 5) is formatted in ReFS automatically by DPM in case it helps.

    Thanks.

    Regards.

  • You would need to check the DPM logs for more clues to why the recovery is failing.

    DPM server log:

    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center\DPM\DPM\Temp\MSDPMCurr.errlog

    Hyper-V host log:

    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Temp\DPMRACurr.errlog

  • Hi,

There is a know code defect in DPM 2019 when performing recovery for Disk to Tape (D2T) backup of RCT based Hyper-V VM.   Recovery for a Disk to Disk to Tape (D2D2T)backup does not have the problem.   This should be fixed in the next DPM 2019 update rollup.

  • Hello,

I ended up using one of the two free MS support case my visual studio/MSDN account allows me to use but for now, they are not really useful or efficient...

Mike Jacquet: Thank you for this info. Where did you find it ? And do you know when we can expect the next Update Rollup for DPM 2019 ? It's so crazy for me that Microsoft released a version without having tested that.

    Thank you.

    Q) Where did you find it ?

I worked with a DPM customer that first reported this issue which let to the code defect discovery.  This was fixed in DPM 2016 UR7 and was then ported to DPM 2019 and will be in UR1.
