Restoring SharePoint WFE on a new server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

For testing purpose is there a way i can restore the WFE on a new server(whose name is different from wfe from where backup was taken)? I am trying to see if we can use DPE to reduce our time in setting up dev/test servers. Idea is to take a back up of production and then restore it on multiple dev/test servers. SO that we save our time in doing setup of test machines.

    Regards

  • Hi,

Afraid not, that would be the same as a DR restore - article Recovering SharePoint Farm Content: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399288.aspx

In a DR scenario, for a full farm recovery to work out, SharePoint requires all the original SQL and WFE machines (with the original machine names) to be brought up and then the data be recovered. It also requires the same IIS websites + settings, custom web parts etc.,  to be present and operational so that the content that was recovered becomes available. Hence the cautionary note "You cannot perform a full farm recovery to a new location."
