Hyper-V VM (Essentials 2016) Won't Start after Windows Update Reboot RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hyper-V newbie here.

I setup a Windows 2016 Hyper-V Core and installed Server 2016 Essentials (trial) VM. 24GB RAM, C Drive w/100GB of disk. Went through the initial Essentials config, rebooted, no issues. Enabled Windows Updates and let it run, grab updates and install. Requested the reboot to complete. Went through all of the "Installing Updates..." and then finally went to reboot. The VM powered off instead of rebooting, when the time came.

The VM will not power up. From the Hyper-V Manager, it shows the VM State to be "Off." When I try and start it, I get an error that just says "XXX failed to change state." From Powershell on the Core, the State is OFF and the Status is "Operating normally". I have also rebooted the core.

How do I go about getting the VM back up and running? It's just a trial so no production issues. I'd like to feel comfortable with this if we do go ahead with Hyper-V.

    Thanks in advance!   - Steve
