Word 2007 docx vs doc - faxing issues

We recently updated some standard office letters from .doc to .docx. Now we find that when we fax any letter saved as .docx it changes the appearance of the document. It also comes through on the fax as displayed below. Documents saved as .doc fax correctly.
This happens on PC's using Windows XP Pro SP3 and Windows 7 SP1, both using Office 2007 Professional SP3.
Any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be appreciated!

Hi,
Can you see Compatibility Mode in the title bar of the document window when you open .doc file.
If so, please test convert Word document to Office 2007 mode, follow these steps:
- Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Convert.
- In the Microsoft Office Word dialog box, click OK.
Do one of the following:
- To replace the original file with a file in the Office Word 2007 file format, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Save.
- To save the original document in its original file format and create another document in the Office Word 2007 file format, click the
Microsoft Office Button, click Save As, and then type a new name for the file.
NOTE If the original .doc file is saved in a location other than your local drive, Word keeps the original .doc file and creates a new .docx file when you click Convert.
Tip: It's recommend to create another document test this issue.
