Disable log truncation during Host Level Backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I have a 3 nodes Hyper-V Cluster, the hosts are Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter.

    Some of my guests are Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010.

    When i backup the Exchange VMs the guest is aware of the backup and it flush the transaction logs.

    I want to disable this feature. Every solution I found refers to this KB:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975354

    but this KB refers to Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V host, I'm not sure that it applies also to Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts.

    Is there somebody that tried on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V host? Does it still apply?

  • Specifically, adding this registry key seems to resolve the issue:

    ==========================

    Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtualization\VssRequestor
    Name: BackupType
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 0 or 1

    If this registry entry is created and its value is set to 1, application backup will not be affected by the virtual machine backup operation on the server  that is running Hyper-V.  If this registry entry does not exist, or if its value is 0, issue 3 occurs.
