Premium Journaling rules and target addresses

    Question

  • Hello,

IN Exchange 2013 do messages sent to a user with a targetaddress attribute applied get journaled before the message is routed to the targetaddress destination?

    Thanks

  • Yes. The message gets journaled in the Categorizer portion of the Transport Service.  See the Exchange 2013 Architectural Overview diagram here - http://aka.ms/Ex2013ArchitecturePoster.   Look at the bottom right hand side and see that Journaling is part of the Categorizer.  Also notice that the Delivery Queues are after the Categorizer.

For fun, I just set this up in a lab and it does indeed work as expected.  If a mailbox has an target address set, and journaling is configured for that mailbox alone, a message sent to the mailbox will be journaled.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

  • Hi,

Journaling, as a built-in transport agents.  It works on OnRoutedMessage or OnCategorizedMessage as above mentioned in  Exchange 2013 Architectural Overview.

Moreover, we can modify the scope for journaling rule. We can enable rule for internal, external mail flow or both. More details about Journaling, please refer to: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998649(v=exchg.150).aspx
